The “future of work” has been on the agenda of many scientific disciplines for a long time. This thematic issue relates the future of work to social protection, welfare and new technologies and aims to consider its social reflections from a broad perspective. More specifically, it explores medium and long-term future expectations at the intersection of typical / atypical work, the right to health and social protection, poverty and well-being. In this context, it asks the following general question: What are the effects of the widespread and rapid change triggered by advanced technology and rapid digitalization on individual / social welfare, current forms of work, social relations and society’s general organization forms?

Here are some examples of research questions that can be addressed by the authors in this issue:

• What global trends are affecting work and how can changes in work affect poverty / well-being or social protection systems in general?
• How will global epidemics and catastrophes affect health, poverty and social welfare solidarity?
• How will the repercussions and effects of new forms of work occur in the context of the working poor?
• What kind of change / transformation will Society 5.0 conditions, which incorporate all these transformations, make about social protection and about society’s ability to preserve it?
